Mexico El Zapoteco

Despite Mexico’s status as a growing economic force, the southern coffee-producing states of Oaxaca and Chiapas are experiencing a very different reality. Climate related disease has obliterated yields in recent years pushing many to migrate to urban centres. Coffee is disappearing and swift action needs to be taken to improve the viability of these family farms to bring about more guaranteed income. We have worked with the non-profit Raw Material (RM) for the past few years who have established relationships with producing groups across the Sierra Juarez mountain range. These relationships are based around higher prices, earlier payments and long-term relationships that are future focused.
For the producers of El Zapoteco, community is key. No migrant labour is utilised for the harvest season, instead producers rely on the help of their neighbours to gather in the cherries. This collective effort has created the most beautiful cup of coffee with a really sweet and bold character. We really hope that the tradition of coffee production in this region is secured for future generations and of course, for our customers too!

This Coffee's Story

From the producers formerly known as ‘Paraje Los Machos’, this sweet and balanced belter is back for a second season. Their name may have changed but El Zapoteco are still the same amazing community of producers in the Southern state of Oaxaca, who help each other through the harvest by lending picking support in return for lunch!
