This Coffee's Story

Four years on from receiving our first microlot from Finca Margarita and Maria Zoila Pineda’s Pacamara is tasting as good as ever! The super-sized pacamara varietal is well-known for dominating many a Cup of Excellence competition in El Salvador due to its outstanding potential for achieving exceptional cup quality when grown at high altitude. The only caveat being that crops can yield less fruit and are generally more susceptible to disease and pests. Upon tasting Maria’s then honey-processed pacamara back in 2019, our host from Caravela informed us that her past lots had reached scores of up to a tongue tingling 90 SCA however the quality of the green coffee was inconsistent and unfortunately marked down accordingly.

Finca Margarita has since been the focus of North Star’s first funded infrastructure project alongside our friends and export partners Caravela. A project designed to create a more viable business model and certain future in coffee for Maria and her workers. Now complete, infrastructure improvements and post-harvest processing upgrades have gone on to strengthen the foundations of Finca Margarita - improving coffee quality, increasing income and creating conditions for a more resilient and dignified livelihood in coffee. Off the back of the project, Maria has been inspired to continue investing in her farm with the goal of producing even higher-quality coffee. Coffee that may never have existed if it had not been for this level of investment. Her son has also now joined the operation, marking a meaningful step towards generational renewal and going on to prove that long-term relationships and impactful projects can motivate producers to continue working in this profession.

Consistency is no longer an issue for Maria and her coffee's quality is standout, especially the microlot's she produces. We are beyond excited to welcome back this extra special washed micro-lot for a fourth year. Expect heaps of malic acidity that results in a super crisp brew. We're talking tart green apple and juicy green grape with a beautifully sweet honeyed finish.

This Coffee's Origin

Our first North Star funded project designed to support Maria Zoila Piñeda - the producer behind Finca Margarita. With the help of export partners Caravela and Maria herself, we created a 3-stage infrastructure improvement project designed to bring about lot separation, better quality and consistency, efficient use of labour, lower emissions and ultimately, greater access to more income.
