El Salvador

El Salvador may be the smallest country in Central America but it was once the 4th largest coffee producer worldwide, its people having lent a big hand in shaping the future of speciality coffee. Coffee is grown over seven of the fourteen provinces in El Salvador, with almost 12 percent of the country’s arable land dedicated to growing the crop by approximately 20,000 producers. The majority of producers here grow coffee on less than 20 hectares of land, thanks to the rules that followed the redistribution of land after the civil war. We choose to work with a community of producers in a lesser known region of Northern El Salvador, Chalatenango. Here, our import partner Caravela provide education and resources to smaller-scale farms, furthering opportunities for producers to harvest, mill, market, and sell their coffee, tackling issues with traceability and transparency, and providing a fair income while reducing cash flow difficulties. With greater support in place, more and more producers are able to thrive opposed to just surviving, thanks to improved yields, increased quality and better protection against future disease.

This Coffee's Story

This year we’re excited to present something a little different while continuing a relationship that has grown over nearly a decade. This lot comes from Eric Roberto Landaverde, a dedicated producer from the Los Chelazos community in La Palma, Chalatenango, El Salvador. Eric has contributed to the Chelazos community blend on and off since 2017 and is part of a family renowned locally for producing consistently high-quality, characterful coffees.

Eric’s Gesha is the result of years of careful experimentation and refinement. Working alongside his family, he processes coffees at a shared washing and drying station located at a lower altitude, where stable conditions allow for slow, controlled natural drying on raised beds. This meticulous approach has helped unlock the full potential of this varietal in a region not traditionally known for high-scoring Geshas.

Eric is deeply involved in every step of production and quality control, regularly cupping his coffees and seeking feedback to continually improve. His passion, attention to detail, and willingness to experiment have culminated in a standout lot that reflects both his skill and the unique microclimate of his farm.

In the cup, expect a vibrant and expressive profile that showcases the elegance of Gesha alongside the fruit-forward character of natural processing. This is a special micro-lot produced with care and intention, and part of our ongoing commitment to supporting long-term producer relationships and rewarding quality within the communities we work with.
