"Brewing up the ljabo Honey on Aeropress really makes the sticky date notes sing. There's a sweet-shop nostalgia in it, and great depth of character."

How Does The Coffee Perform In The Cup?

The aroma is rich with ripe fruit, honey and soft citrus. Candied peel brings bright, zesty sweetness before pear drops add playful fruit character and Medjool date rounds everything out with a smooth, syrupy body. The honey process gives the coffee a wonderfully rounded mouthfeel and a long, lingering finish that makes it especially rewarding brewed through metal filter methods, where its texture and sweetness can really shine.

Helping build the next generation of coffee farmers

This coffee is connected to the Ijabo Youth Project in Rwanda, a long-term initiative helping more young people build livelihoods and opportunities through coffee.

Every bag helps support a future where the next generation can continue growing the coffees we all love.

Who produced this coffee?

The Ijabo producer group is based in the rolling green hills of Nyamasheke in western Rwanda, where coffee grows alongside bananas, beans and other crops on small family farms overlooking Lake Kivu.

Many of the young producers are establishing coffee farms of their own for the very first time. Throughout the harvest, ripe red cherries are carefully picked by hand before making their way to the washing station, where quality is protected at every stage. Alongside growing exceptional coffee, they’re building new skills, financial independence and confidence in a future they can create within their own communities.

The group chose the name Ijabo, meaning “dignity” in Kinyarwanda. A reflection of the pride, opportunity and hope they believe coffee can continue creating for the next generation.

Why we chose this coffee

When we launched the Ijabo project, we made a commitment.
We committed to purchasing every harvest the group produced because projects like this only become sustainable when producers know there’s a reliable market waiting for the coffee they’ve worked so hard to grow. Long-term relationships need long-term confidence.

Seeing this second harvest reach a quality we’re proud to share makes that commitment feel incredibly worthwhile. It’s a reminder that when talented people are given the opportunity, support and confidence to build something of their own, exceptional coffee often follows.

Region: Nyamasheke District, Western Rwanda
Altitude: 2,200 metres above sea level

Packaging

Are your coffee bags compostable?

Our 250g coffee bags are made using compostable materials designed to break down in a well-managed home compost setup.

Our 1kg bags are currently recyclable LDPE4 plastic while we continue testing larger compostable alternatives durable enough for wholesale and larger-format coffee storage.

What if I don’t have a compost bin?

You’re definitely not alone. You can return your used bags to either our Roastery or Coffee Shop and we’ll make sure they’re properly processed through our waste partners. We know there’s currently no perfect packaging solution, but we’re committed to continually improving the systems and materials we use.

Can the bags be re-used?

Definitely. The zip-lock seals make them useful for storing everything from coffee and grains to snacks, cables or the random drawer bits everyone seems to accumulate somehow.
