"I love recommending this to our wholesale partners because it works just as well behind the bar as it does on the retail shelf. It’s approachable, dependable and the kind of coffee customers come back asking for."

How Does The Coffee Perform In The Cup?

Expect sweet aromas of ripe stone fruit and soft caramel from the first pour. The cup opens with juicy sweetness before crisp green apple adds brightness and lift. As it cools, the caramel sweetness becomes more pronounced, giving the coffee a smooth, syrupy body and a long, clean finish. It’s wonderfully balanced throughout, making it just as enjoyable brewed as filter as it is served with milk as espresso.

Why did we choose this coffee?

We chose La Colmena because it represents a way of sourcing coffee that feels refreshingly collaborative.

Through our import partner Semilla and the Monkaaba initiative, producers don’t just sell coffee. They taste it together, learn from one another and continually refine their craft. That shared knowledge helps more growers produce specialty coffee, access better markets and build greater confidence in what they do.
We were the first roastery in the UK to bring this field blend to market, but what excites us most is seeing a community where success isn’t measured by one producer standing out, but by everyone moving forward together.

Who produced this coffee?

La Colmena is a close-knit community of around thirty coffee-growing families based in San Agustín, Huila. Alongside experienced producers are younger growers taking their first steps into specialty coffee, all contributing to a coffee that reflects the strength of the wider community rather than any one individual.

At the heart of La Colmena are weekly cupping sessions led by Esnaider Ortega Gomez, where producers bring their coffees for sensory evaluation, honest feedback and practical advice. Some members have gone on to produce exceptional microlots of their own, whilst others are only just beginning that journey. Together, they’re proving that sharing knowledge can be just as valuable as sharing the harvest.

Packaging

Are your coffee bags compostable?

Our 250g coffee bags are made using compostable materials designed to break down in a well-managed home compost setup.

Our 1kg bags are currently recyclable LDPE4 plastic while we continue testing larger compostable alternatives durable enough for wholesale and larger-format coffee storage.

What if I don’t have a compost bin?

You’re definitely not alone. You can return your used bags to either our Roastery or Coffee Shop and we’ll make sure they’re properly processed through our waste partners. We know there’s currently no perfect packaging solution, but we’re committed to continually improving the systems and materials we use.

Can the bags be re-used?

Definitely. The zip-lock seals make them useful for storing everything from coffee and grains to snacks, cables or the random drawer bits everyone seems to accumulate somehow.
