Uganda

In spite of being in possession of many of the characteristics necessary for the cultivation of high quality coffee (high altitude, fertile soil, standout varietals), Uganda has never enjoyed the same reputation for coffee as its neighbouring Kenya. The Coffee Gardens is seeking to change that narrative. By prioritising integrated impact (contributing payments towards improving local facilities), sharing knowledge (establishing a QC lab for the community) and improving cup profile (helping to offset losses in yield from drought/climate events), they have become a trusted partner for many smallholder farmers in the region and are growing their reach and impact year on year.

This Coffee's Story

We are so delighted to welcome a lot from a long admired supply chain in Uganda established by Dana, Micheal and Shak in 2017 - a trio united by a desire to unlock the potential that coffee can create for the community living on and working the land surrounding Mt Elgon in the East of the country.

In a highly liberalised coffee market, the Coffee Gardens has had to work hard to develop its value proposition for producers beyond just paying a high price for the amazing cherry that is grown. Alongside this, they provide post-season bonuses, additional income-generating and employment opportunities, tree distribution and a range of all-year-round training programs. They are also relatively unique in prioritising a transparent flow of information when it comes to payments, ensuring each registered farmer receives a contract and record book and receipts for every transaction.

This particular lot comes from a partnership with Norman Mukuru who founded 'The Coffee Yard' in 2018 - a collection point for local producers offering a range of post-harvest processing and dry mill services. The Muki fruity is a beautifully prepared naturally processed lot whereby the cherries have been floated (for separation) and drip dried before being fermented for 36 hours in lidded barrels and dried naturally on raised beds for a minimum of 21 days in the sunshine. The Coffee Gardens are providing him access to the international market and it is a partnership that is delivering great value back into the local area.

The microlot was named by combining the names of both Norman Mukuru and Maria Kirya. Maria, Head of Quality at The Coffee Yard, has been with the company since its inception in 2018 and brings years of experience, having worked in coffee since 2009. She is fundamental to coffee taste profile development and has a skilled palate to create lots that best showcase the coffee's quality, providing invaluable feedback to the producer and curating an amazing offer for the international market.
