Ethiopia

Being the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopian beans simply burst with character conveying hundreds of years of history and heritage in the cup. High altitude, landrace varietals and experienced processing combine to create some of the most complex coffees available worldwide.

This Coffee's Story

A fantastic example of all that is wonderful about Ethiopian coffee! This lot from the Gotiti Washing Station located in Gotiti Kebele has been harvested by approximately 868 micro-entrepreneurs from the surrounding area and is bursting with complexity and is almost tea-like in character! There are delicious blueberry and floral notes which make this a coffee best suited to paper filter methods and served without milk.

Gotiti washing station follows strict water management and traceability practices, reducing water use, separating coffee pulp from wastewater, and implementing efficient record-keeping from farm to export. Gotiti’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility is also exemplary, providing coffee seedlings to the community, financial support to underprivileged farmers, and premium payments based on coffee deliveries. These efforts not only enhance sustainability but also strengthen the relationships between farmers and the washing station.

As with all of our Ethiopian purchases, we also support import partner, Falcon Specialty’s, amazing ‘Stumping Project’ which has been established alongside non-profit organisation TechnoServe. In recent years, coffee producing regions have seen their yield (and therefore income from coffee) severely impacted. Agronomists have attributed this low yield to the ageing stock of coffee trees across the country which will continue to produce less and less cherries as time goes on.

‘The Stumping Project’ is a pilot study designed to test the success of the provision of incentives to encourage Ethiopian producers to stump their coffee trees. An effective tool in farm management that can help to breathe new life into a farmer’s crop and ultimately improve yield. Since 2022, your purchases of Ethiopian coffee have gone on to help 22 families rejuvenate their farms and increase household income. So enjoy this cup which not only tastes good but does good too!
