We have just returned from the Young British Foodie Awards ceremony at The Tate Britain and are overjoyed to announce that we won!! It was a fantastic night spent amongst so many great artisan producers, many of which were from our neck of the woods, and it really left us with an overwhelming sense of how the British food and drink scene has developed over the last few years. We are so happy to be counted amongst the other shortlisters – there were over 400 entries this year from artisan independent businesses hoping to be recognised for their contribution, and only 52 made it through to the finals. Categories included baking, chefs, meat, food writing, alcohol, street food, vegetable, coffee and honourary and each group was judged by a panel of industry specialists.
We were judged by Tim Williams (former director of Workshop Coffee turned independent green coffee sourcer), Phil Gevaux (head roaster at Tate Roastery) and Marco Arrigo (Head of Quality for Illy coffee, co-owner of Bar Termini in Soho, London). When we were announced the winner of the Coffee category, Tim commended our connection to the producing partners we work with at origin along with our attention to detail when it comes to roasting. He said we typified everything that the speciality coffee industry should be celebrating. This was truly music to our ears and really embodies everything we have tried to do with North Star since our humble beginning two years ago. It is just fantastic to be recognised by such respected figures in the industry and we are delighted to bring the award home to Leeds!
Thanks to everyone for your kind words and support – we have been overwhelmed by the response we have had and are proud to be part of such a vibrant and evolving community in the North.
Tim Williams – ‘This year’s YBF winner in coffee typifies so much of what the industry should be celebrating; a genuine connection to the farmers growing our coffee, a hands-on and involved approach to the craft of roasting, and youthful, entrepreneurial enthusiasm (outside the M25)!’
The YBFs – ‘@NorthStarRoast is the #coffeeking.’
