The Sensory Skills modules are designed to help you better understand how we taste and perceive flavour and therefore how to interpret coffee’s quality and character.
The Foundation level focuses on the essentials of sensory evaluation paying particular attention to our gustatory and olfactory sensory systems. We then look at how to apply these senses when cupping coffee and how to set up a cupping in a manner that pays attention to the consistency and calibration of equipment and the control of variables.
You will learn in a very practical and interactive manner the way we perceive what we taste and how to apply it to the evaluation of the intrinsic characteristics of coffee. It also offers an introduction to identify specialty coffee qualities and gain an overview on how to implement it in your business.
The course provides you with the key information to enable you to sit your Sensory Skills Foundation certification that consists of 4 short practical exams and a written exam (15 questions -pass rate of 60% required). Successful students will be awarded 5 points towards the SCA Coffee Skills Diploma.
This is a one day course for a maximum of 6 people, this cost does include VAT but does not cover the certification fee as this is dependent on your SCA membership. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
All courses take place at the North Star Coffee Academy based at Leeds Dock. We are very easily accessible by either foot (15 minutes from Leeds train station), bus, car (multi-storey car park available on site) or water taxi which goes directly to and from the train station every 20 minutes. There is also a Holiday Inn on site for courses lasting more than a day.
Once you have booked your place, we will be in touch with further details about your course. In the meantime, if you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
