Description

If you are new to the coffee industry or are simply a coffee lover wanting to get an overview of the coffee industry, then the Introduction to Coffee module is perfect.

 

The module charts coffee’s journey from its origins in Ethiopia through to the major commodity it is today, enjoyed by millions. It looks into the processes that coffee goes through, from the cherries being picked on farms all over the world, to the various processing methods used to extract the beans, and eventually how the roaster develops the flavours we love – you will also be able to see roasting demonstration on our Ikawa sample roaster. Finally it gives an overview of the various brewing methods we choose to make our coffee, with a few key standards to uphold. Topics covered:

 

  • What is Specialty Coffee and where it fits our market

 

  • The history of coffee 

 

  • The differences between Arabica and Robusta 

 

  • The differences between “washed” (wet) and “natural” (dry) processed coffee 

 

  • The basics of roasting 

 

  • The basics of brewing (what is brewing, alternative methods)

 

  • Storage & the importance of freshness.

 

  • Sensory, tasting & understanding flavour descriptions.

 

As well as the theory you will get to try a “coffee cupping” to taste some of the various and wonderful flavours coffee has to offer. The course provides you with the key information to enable you to sit your Introduction to Coffee certification that consists of a short practical exam and a written exam (25 questions with a pass rate of 60% required). Successful students will be awarded 10 points towards the SCA Coffee Skills Diploma. Should you want to access the 10 points/certification, you must select ‘Yes’ from the dropdown menu titled ‘Exam Fee/Certification’ – you will then be sent an invoice for £55 which is the amount payable for the cost of the written exam.

Booking Details

Upon booking, you will receive a confirmation email stating the course and date you have signed up to. If you have chosen to attend a course in our North Star Coffee Academy, you will receive an email from our trainer ahead of the course taking place to confirm the address and start time along with parking info/directions. If you are attending a virtual course, you will be emailed with the Zoom details required to join the session.
