About

This coffee comes to us from Finca El Bosque, a farm we had the pleasure of visiting in 2014 – it is 140 hectares in total but the majority of that land is untouched and left as a natural reserve, just 30 hectares are planted with coffee. It truly is a magical place with incredible wildlife and lots of shade trees which really contribute to the overall quality in the cup. The cherries are able to ripen and develop slowly, they are selectively hand picked and meticulously processed in one of the cleanest wet mills we have ever seen.

Details

The coffee industry in Nicaragua has undergone periods of turmoil that have hindered the development of the speciality sector in the country. Many experienced coffee farmers fled during the years under Sandinista rule of the late 1970s to the 1990s. When the political scene changed, those farmers returned and not long after, Nicaragua started to produce some very good coffee. However, the devastating effects of Hurricane Mitch and the prolonged world coffee price crisis created further giant -sized hurdles for a country that can, and now does, produce some very desirable coffees indeed. This year has been particularly challenging with the recent political strikes which have had a massive impact since April – hundreds of people have been killed so far in the demonstrations against the government and things have generally ground to a halt, including the export of our coffee.

Right now it looks like things are hopefully moving in the right direction, we have been kept up to speed with everything by our friend and producer of this coffee, Julio Peralta. Julio has been producing some of the best coffee’s in the country for a very long time and has really championed the growing specialty industry in his region. This coffee comes to us from Finca El Bosque, a farm we had the pleasure of visiting in 2014 – it is 140 hectares in total but the majority of that land is untouched and left as a natural reserve, just 30 hectares are planted with coffee. We are delighted to finally be able to present this coffee which has been a little harder than usual to come by, we hope you enjoy it and ask you to spare a thought when brewing it for those courageous individuals who have lost their lives in peaceful protests whilst simply trying to fight for a better Nicaragua.
