This is a practical course aimed at the home barista or coffee enthusiasts wishing to learn more about how to create great espresso and milk-based drinks from their own kitchen. This session lasts for three hours and requires no previous experience at all.
Throughout the course you will gain the opportunity to clarify plenty of coffee-related questions on your mind, as well as fielding enquiries about products on the market and how to buy things to suit your needs. In house we use an advanced array of home espresso equipment including the La Marzocco Linea Mini alongside the industry-leading Baratza Sette grinder, alongside our commercial La Marzocco Linea PB espresso machine that is available for use too. We will also be able to detail and evaluate the pros and cons of choosing particular types of equipment, and develop appropriate workarounds for whatever situation you have at home currently.
During the course we will explore the principles of the coffee supply chain with a full-spectrum cupping, while outlining what to expect from coffees found on all sides of the coffee market. We will detail the impact of various commercial priorities on coffee as an end product for you as coffee consumers, and guide you towards finding the right coffees for your own preferences, or those of others.
We will then introduce the theory behind espresso brewing including the adjustment and calibration of a grinder, before covering off milk steaming technique and the foundations of pouring latte art. You’ll also learn about the background set-up of quality espresso including what to do about your brewing water and where to start with your routine at home. You will receive tailored feedback and guidance regarding your practical skills, with relevant goals and aims to keep in mind to further improve your results at home going forward.
There will be ample time allocated for you to jump on one of our machines and start building the right espresso-making habits yourself, making the best use of your time with Ollie, our licensed SCA barista trainer. You’ll receive a wealth of barista training materials following the course, and get the chance to keep in touch with Ollie with any equipment or coffee-related questions too!
All courses take place at the North Star Coffee Academy based at Leeds Dock. We are very easily accessible by either foot (15 minutes from Leeds train station), bus, car (multi-storey car park available on site) or water taxi which goes directly to and from the train station every 20 minutes. There is also a Holiday Inn on site for courses lasting more than a day.
