This contemporary seasonal espresso blend is all about showcasing the very best coffees from the most recent harvests taking place throughout the year. With frequently changing components, it aims to promote seasonal coffees that are chosen for their interesting and fresh flavours.
Version 18 has a deliciously coating mouthfeel with incredible sweetness and complexity. As espresso, the blend displays notes of honeydew melon and nectarine with hints of marzipan, the addition of milk creates more of a fudgey character with mellow notes of ripe peach. It is a true celebration of fresh harvest coffees from very different continents working together in complete harmony, we hope you enjoy!
Czar Street is made up of the following components:
60% Nicaragua Los Pozitos
This is the second year we have bought coffee from this 35 hectare farm in Jinotega which is owned and managed by Edwin Burgos Garcia. When Edwin came by the land, it had been left abandoned and forgotten after years of environmental and political hurdles by way of Hurricane Mitch and the Sandinista uprising which has displaced thousands of people and has halted the progress of the Nicaraguan specialty coffee industry. Over the last decade, he has managed to renovate the entire plantation working with traditional varieties in the interest of producing outstanding cupping coffee. Since his ownership, not only has the quality improved but also the yield with 10 times the amount of coffee now being produced.
The last two years have been particularly challenging with the recent political strikes which have seen hundreds of people killed – there are demonstrations still ongoing making the coffee supply chain more challenging than usual. This coffee is a great example of all that is delicious about Nicaraguan coffee and we are happy to be able to continue buying it – it is super syrupy in character with notes of melon and caramel and it brings great structure and depth to this version of our seasonal blend.
40% Ethiopia Geta Bore
This beautiful example of a washed Ethiopian coffee comes to us from the Geta Bore coop, part of the Kata Muduga Union Coop Society which is responsible for some of the best known coffees from the region of Jimma – the Duromina, Nano Challa and Yukro stations are all part of this Society. In 2010, the development project TechnoServe (funded by Bill and Melinda Gates) helped these coops in remote producing regions to improve the quality of what they produced increasing the price that could be achieved for these coffees – nowadays, they consistently generate some of the highest prices paid to farmers in the country. Geta Bore is one of the coops that benefitted – it is located in the Metu Bishari forest which provides ample shade coverage for the slow development of the cherries. This factor combined with landrace varietals from this region has created an incredibly refined cup with delicate floral notes and hints of apricot and juicy mango.
