This contemporary seasonal espresso blend is all about showcasing the very best coffees from the most recent harvests taking place throughout the year. With frequently changing components, it aims to promote seasonal coffees that are chosen for their interesting and fresh flavours.
Version 17 is a beautifully balanced, super sweet and sticky masterpiece. Expect notes of peach, marzipan, cherry and pecan. In true Czar St. style the resulting blend is versatile, working well without or with milk as a contemporary coffee option.
Czar Street V.17 is made up of the following components:
70% Peru Fredy Bermeo
This lot has come to us from a producer we have had the pleasure of working with twice before who is defying the normal way of working and throwing all he has into bettering his coffee year on year. Fredy Bermeo has just 5 hectares of land that he inherited from his dad in 2002 but has been focusing his efforts on specialty coffee production since 2011. The conditions are challenging with drying being particularly difficult thanks to the damp climate making it a real battle to carefully process his coffee from cherry to parchment layer. His efforts have definitely paid off, he took 3rd place in the 2017 Cup of Excellence competition and we see an improvement in cup profile each year. We cherish his coffee thanks to its incredible sweetness and hints of mango, marzipan and orange. It makes a great base to this seasonal blend helping to create a moreish sweet and sticky espresso.
30% Burundi Ncamwayacu
In a nation where the coffee industry is becoming increasingly privatised with the help of investment from overseas, we were delighted to find and secure a lot from the locally owned Ncamwayacu cooperative. A truly independent producing group run by smallholder farmers in the Western region of Muyinga which borders the DRC. When translated, Ncamwayacu means ‘Our source of revenue’ – there are 750 members of this group producing coffee at between 1450 and 1550 metres above sea level. Once the ripe cherries have been picked, they are delivered to the Wyngoma washing station where they are fermented for between 12-18 hours to break down the sugars in the fruit flesh before being soaked for 12 hours to continue the development of flavour ahead of the coffee being stripped of the fruit flesh and dried on raised beds for up to 17 days. The resulting lot is one full of complexity with a whole host of flavours found right the way from hot to cold. It is a welcome addition to this version of Czar St. providing complexity and extra layers of flavour in the form of syrupy peach and juicy cherry.
