Kenya

We have had the pleasure of working with Vava Angwenyi for the sourcing of our Kenyan coffees since 2019. Through her, we are able to not only get our hands on some of the most outstanding lots, but we can also access real data from the ground to understand the costs of production and challenges faced by producers. Kenya is a fairly complex country to source coffee from and it has previously been really difficult to form any kind of relationship with producers so we really value the friendship and working relationship we have established with Vava.

This Coffee's Story

We welcome back this unique natural processed Kenyan lot from producer Mutai Kinyua, owner of the wonderful farm ‘Deman’. Mutai has hosted us twice at his little slice of paradise in Meru County - beautiful scenery that is brimming with lush mango trees, banana and macadamia! We continue to be astounded by his unwavering commitment to the regenerative farming methods he practices and the lengths he goes to maintain an equitable distribution of wealth in the coffee supply chain.

Mutai has been farming with agroforestry (regenerative agriculture) principles for 20 years since taking on the farm, and first undertook a transition from traditional agriculture processes. What we mean by that is he essentially had to re-establish and revitalise an ecosystem that had been accustomed to heavy fertiliser, pesticide and herbicide use. Now, the farm is more of a tropical paradise, no longer tainted by widespread chemical use but instead filled with biodiversity – that goes for the coffee trees, shrubs, weeds, insects, nut trees and fruit trees.

There has been loyal staff working on Deman Estate for over 10 years now, breaking the traditional cycle of having seasonal workers in picking and processing. Long-serving members of the picking and processing teams that we spoke to acknowledged that it felt majorly improved working alongside Mutai rather than within other nearby farms, and they felt valued – it turns out he pays 4 x the market rate for labour to value his staff and incentivise staying the cause of working in regenerative agriculture.

Mutai has been an instrumental figure in his community having coordinated the distribution efforts for the PPE and funds we managed to raise during the height of the pandemic in 2020. We were introduced to him by our close friend Vava Angwenyi who has been working in this area to develop longer lasting relationships with small estates. Mutai has been a great advocate for Vava’s work, encouraging many of his neighbours to work with her too. He participated in the sensory workshop we ran during our visit for participants of the Gente del Futuro initiative (set up by Vava and designed to support youth in the area) and the quality of his coffee continues to come on leaps and bounds. This lot is sweet and syrupy and we feel genuinely proud to have it back on our offer list!
