Ethiopia Yidnekachew Dabessa Washed

We always enjoy having a washed and a natural processed coffee from Ethiopia. As a coffee producing country, we really think it is the origin that displays the most terroir specific aromas in the cup thanks to the incredible natural forests and the fact that coffee was first discovered here in the 10th century – you can near enough taste a thousand years of growing history!

This Coffee's Story

One of two Ethiopian lots from exciting new buying partner, Bertu Coffee. A forward-thinking green coffee company that is distancing itself from Ethiopia’s traditional supply chain by creating a buying model that puts farmer first and rewards those who adopt a more long-term mindset. A mindset that emphasises the importance of establishing stronger relationships between producer and buyer. By shifting to this new way of thinking, Bertu sees massive potential to fund project investments back at origin, to introduce additional payments for exceptional cupping coffees, and to ultimately safeguard their producer’s farming operations for the future.

Yidnekachew Dabessa Chalchissa is an organic-certified farm and washing station that covers over 150 hectares deep in the heart of a beautiful forest just outside the village of Wolensu, Limu. The farm is owned by Yidnekachew Dabessa and managed by his brother Mesfin, who were inspired into production by their father and fellow coffee producer. In a bid to replicate their father’s success, albeit it on a larger scale, they invested heavily in Chalchissa back in 2008, both expanding production and obtaining an export permit which allowed them to position themselves on the international market. The farm now has about 50 hectares of mature coffee 40 hectares of young coffee that is just entering production. The remaining 60 hectares is healthy and at peak bearing age.

Both Yidnekachew and Mesfin are highly aware of the importance of understanding their costs of production as well as making continual investments back into the development of their farm. It is this growth mindset and shared way of thinking that led Yidnekachew to Bertu. A relationship that is helping the Dabessa brothers build a more viable business model that focuses heavily on the future. A model that will allow them to build stronger buyer relationships, achieve operational excellence across production and build on the work they’ve already started in moving towards a zero carbon footprint.

We begin our relationship with this amazing producer, having secured a unique washed lot that is pleasantly different from other washed Ethiopian we have featured in recent years. Expect a coffee that offers plenty of complexity alongside a beautifully delicate tea-like character. It’s cane sugar sweetness and delicious lemon and blackberry notes make for a tasty cup that is best brewed using paper filter methods.
