More Info

The Thotulagalla Estate can be found in the Uva region of Sri Lanka in the country’s central mountain range. The land here is absolutely perfect for the production of tea with rich and fertile soils, altitudes of 1500 metres above sea level and therefore cooler climates.

It was established in 1931 and the estate is made up from a vast landscape of rolling hills, covering an area of around 200 hectares. Most of the land has been formed into hillside terraces for tea production which means that harvesting is more efficient. The Muthuswamy family purchased the estate in 1997 and set about implementing changes to the production to ensure the land could achieve its organic certification. The environment is of upmost concern to the family who have transformed the estate, providing a more sustainable environment which supports both the tea and the 184 estate workers, the vast majority of which live on the estate.

The green tea here is first hand plucked with the top two leaves and buds being selected. Next, the leaves are steamed in the factory to open up the pores and allow for some of the enzymes to be released. The leaves are then fired to halt any fermentation before being graded according to size. This tea is orange pekoe.
