Mexico El Zapoteco

We are so happy to have a Mexican coffee on our offer list once more – you guys loved it last year so we wanted to bring it back and this lot from the El Zapoteco producer group does not disappoint. Once again we have worked with the wonderful Raw Material who are fighting to ensure coffee does not disappear from this region following dramatic yield losses due to to climate change. Their buying model and way of working is totally focused on building producer trust and more viable business models so that we can hopefully keep roasting this delicious coffee for you for years to come. This lot jumped out on the cupping table thanks to its bold character and mouthfeel. We found delicious notes of stewed apple, milk chocolate and toffee!

This Coffee's Story

Despite Mexico’s status as a growing economic force, the southern coffee-producing states of Oaxaca and Chiapas are experiencing a very different reality. Climate related disease has obliterated yields in recent years pushing many to migrate to urban centres. Coffee is disappearing and swift action needs to be taken to improve the viability of these family farms to bring about more guaranteed income. We have worked with the non-profit Raw Material (RM) for the past few years who have established relationships with producing groups across the Sierra Juarez mountain range. These relationships are based around higher prices, earlier payments and long-term relationships that are future focused.

Cafe El Zapoteco is the perfect example of one of these successful relationships. Romulo Chavez heads up this association of 180 coffee producing families from three towns in the Sierra Juarez mountain range. For the producers of El Zapoteco, community is key. No migrant labour is utilised for the harvest season, instead producers rely on the help of their neighbours to gather in the cherries. This collective effort has created the most beautiful cup of coffee with a really sweet and bold character. We really hope that the tradition of coffee production in this region is secured for future generations and of course, for our customers too!

Delicious!

We’ve been loyal drinkers of Fazenda Rainha da Paz and were sad to see it go, so we were of course looking for something to fill the void - luckily, this is just as good! A little nuttier and a little less chocolatey but very smooth and rich. We’ll definitely be having it again.

A little difficult to get right, but lovely flavours when you do
